“In 1891 Sarah Adams Whittemore purchased the triangular southeast corner lot at New Hampshire Avenue and Q Street from William Walter Phelps. Mrs.
Whittemore was the daughter of the Reverand Henry Adams a descendant of President John Adams. After her first husband, Sextus Newell Wilcox, died, she married William C. Whittemore.” — National Register Form
