The Battle Monument | Additional Description: The Battle Monument, along with the Washington Monument, prompted President John Quincy Adams to dub Baltimore “the Monumental City.” Monument Square served as a gathering place for important events and also attracted Baltimoreans out for a stroll, such as the African Americans depicted in this 1838 view.
