English translation:
All for the Nation

Curacao February 4, 1844
My dear mother and sisters: The only way I can find to see you again is to gain independence for the nation – and to do that resources are needed! Supreme resources! Those resources that we share in common with our brother Vicente and that we offer for the sake of the nation that we have inherited from the love and work of our father. With the nation made independent I can take care of the store, and through the unlimited credit as a heir of our father and his knowledge in the field of importing our business will improve and we will not have to regret not being worthy sons of the fatherland. Your son and brother, Juan P. Duarte
