Additional Description: Second Plaque on the same boulder. Verity Parkway (St Rt 4) was built on top of what was the Miami- Erie Canal. The canal was abandoned after the 1913 flood. By 1929 highways were being built across America.

1825 1929 On this spot, July 21, 1825 were turned the first spadeful of earth in the construction of the Miami and Erie Canal by Governor Jeremiah Morrow, of Ohio and Governor Dewitt Clinton, of New York men with a vision of transportation needs Middletown Civic Association
