The Corliss Steam Engine Company on West River Street constructed the vertical "Centennial Engine" to power the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia in 1876. It was viewed by nine million visitors. At its peak, 1,000 workers and engineers produced steam engines shipped throughout the world.
