to the memory
of
Col. Thomas Pickens Butler
who died in Richmond, Va.,
on the 21st of February 1864
in the 45th year of his age.
Having been in the service of the Confederate
States from the commencement of the was for
Southern Independence.
He was a Patriot of warm impulses
and devoted fidelity.
He was generous and brave, kind to all,
and had few if any enemies.
He had his failings, who has not.
May God forgive us all.
He sleeps with his Fathers in Carolina soil, and we
will cherish the memory of his nobler qualities.
Requieseat in pace.
As a tribute of love, this marble is placed
over his grave by Widow, Children,
and brother William P. Butler.
