Photographer: Oregon Parks
Caption:
Oswald West | Additional Description: Oswald West sits on his horse near the present-day Ecola State Park. On Feb. 13, 1913, West gave Oregon a gift that has kept giving ever since. He declared the state's beaches a public highway and got the state legislature to back him up. As a result, Oregon has the longest stretch of public beach in the continental United States.
