Polonia - 1863 | Additional Description: Painted by Matejko in 1864, after the failed January Uprising in the preceding year, the painting was hidden behind Matejko's stove at home for a dozen years before being sold privately. The allegorical painting depicts the fate of "Polonia", i.e. Poland, at the hands of the Russians and Prussians, and was published as a postcard by Salon Malarzy Polskich in 1904.
