Caption: Green's Prairie Cemetery Marker
Additional Description: Old marker sign at entrance. Text: This cemetery was established in 1846 as York Township’s first burial site. It was established as a common burial ground. Originally called York Prairie Cemetery, the name was changed to Green’s Prairie Cemetery in 1926 to honor the township’s second settler, William C. Green. At the time of settlement, Green’s Prairie covered more than 5,000 acres. This cemetery is unique in that many of the plants that once inhabited may still be found growing among the tombstones. Cemetery maintenance is limited to a yearly prescribed burn.
