Caption: The "Ecce homo" inscription on the Matamoros Portal
Additional Description: On the northern side of the portal is this inscription: Portal del Ecce Homo, 1774. Ecce homo means "behold the man" and are the Latin words used by Pontius Pilate in the Vulgate translation of John. This phrase represents the moment when a scourged Jesus Christ, bound and crowned with thorns, was presented to a hostile crowd shortly before his Crucifixion.
