Marker detail: Padre Félix Varela | Additional Description: Cuban born Padre Félix Varela spent his childhood in St. Augustine. Educated in Cuba, he become a priest and teacher, but fled to the U.S. when the Spanish Crown condemned him to death for his views on Cuban liberty. His views aroused the patriotism of José Martí and others who later achieved Cuban independence.
