Caption: Marker detail: Spokane, circa 1886
Additional Description: Looking south from the Spokane River, circa 1886. The large building (with the arrow) in the upper portion is the California House, Spokane's first formal hotel. It was built in 1878 at the northeast corner of Front and Howard. The street crossing the river, in the center of the photo, is Howard Street, the first street in Spokane to be paved. Today, the Looff Carousel is located near where the California House once stood. In the foreground is the first span of three bridges that zigzagged across the islands, which constituted the first bridge crossing at the town of Spokane Falls.
