Caption: California State Capital Building Under Construction
Additional Description: On September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state. The capital started out in San Jose, then moved to Vallejo, then Benicia, and then to Sacramento. Due to flooding in 1862 the capital was temporarily moved to San Francisco (January to May). In May, the capital was moved back to Sacramento. Construction began on the Capital Building on September 24, 1860 and fourteen years later the building was completed.
