In 1939, Myrtle "Molly" Kool, became the first woman in North America, and the second in the world, to become a licensed deep sea captain. Born in nearby Alma, she captained the Jean K., a scow owned by her father. For five years she navigated the difficult and dangerous waters of the Bay of Fundy, as well as down the Eastern Seaboard to Boston and up the Petitcodiac to Moncton.
