S.S. Princess Sophia grounded on reef | Additional Description: This photograph, presumably from a nearby vessel, was taken less than 12 hours after the ship hit the reef. The ship's condition did not initially appear dire — its captain at first waved off any attempt at disembarking passengers as it would haven been extremely risky — but the reef prevented any rescue attempt when weather conditions worsened overnight. By next morning, the
Princess Sophia was lost.
