Additional Description: Despite attacks on his character, Du Bois did not give up on the promise of American democracy and remained popular with many in the Black community. When he ran for U.S. Senate from New York as the American Labor Party candidate in 1950, his percentage of the vote was four times greater in Harlem than it was statewide.
