Additional Description: A paymaster in the Continental Army, he served as territorial governor, state legislator and chairman of the convention that drafted Tennessee's first constitution in 1796. He was expelled from the U.S. Senate in 1797 for his involvement in a scheme to incite the Creek and Cherokees to aid the British in conquering Spanish-held West Florida.
