Caption:
New Madrid Floodway | Additional Description: The New Madrid Floodway now drains the bottom land once known as St. John's Bayou. This long, straight, and wide ditch also serves as flood control in the event of high water on the Mississippi River. However, as result, the location where Pope's steamboats worked through the swamp is today dry farmland.
