Amur Tiger
Nine Lives and Counting
The major threats to the Amur tiger are:

Habitat destruction
• Only 10% of the Amur tiger territory is protected.
• Habitat is disappearing due to illegal logging.

Illegal wildlife trade for traditional Asian medicine
Examples of tiger parts and the ailments they are believed to cure:
• Bones → Rheumatism
• Whiskers → Toothaches
• Brain → Laziness, pimples

Human-Tiger conflict
• A lack of prey forces tigers to hunt domestic livestock and dogs.
• Farmers shoot the tigers to save their livelihood.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium supports the Tiger Response Team (WCS Siberian Tiger Project). The Team helps Russian authorities relocate problem tigers.

What Can You and The Zoo Do?
• Buy forest friendly wood products. Shop for certified wood.

• Do not buy any products or medicine made from tigers.

• Support AZA accredited zoos and conservation organizations that help tigers and preserve their habitat.

• Check the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium web site for green consumer trips. www.columbuszoo.org

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium participates in the Tiger Species Survival Program.

[Note: The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is not AZA-accredited as of June 2022. The Zoo formally lost its accreditation in December 2021 because of misrepresentations of how it acquired its animals.]
