People Held in Bondage
During the Haitian Revolution (1791-1810), more that 250,000 free and enslaved individuals arrived from the
French colony of Saint-Domingue. Rufugee Victoire Vincendiere established a 748-acre plantation named L'Hermitage (present-day Best Farm). By 1800, 90 enlaved people lived at L'Hermitage.
