Caption: Union soldiers occupy the Exchange Hotel
Additional Description: The hotel was built in 1841 by Joseph L. Spitz and has had multiple uses over the years. During the Civil War, it was used as a Union hospital and armory. Later, the building housed the J. W. Fuquay store. In 1927, the building was purchased by Louis and Adele Chivian, and Chivian's Department Store operated there until 1973. – Newburgh Chandler Public Library
