James Rifle
Photographer: Craig Swain
Taken: March 16, 2009
Caption: James Rifle
Additional Description: While the battery was likely not equipped with such weapons at the battle, this bronze rifled gun was one of the most advanced weapons on the field in April 1862. This particular piece conforms to the 1861 style Ordnance profile and has ten lands and grooves. The registry number 39 is faintly visible on the muzzle, indicating this to be what historians call a "Type 2, Series 4" James Rifle. The gun was inspected by George T. Balch in 1862. At time of inspection the gun weighted 913 pounds.
