James 3.80-inch Rifle, Registry Number 48 | Additional Description: Reading the muzzle markings from the twelve o'clock position clockwise: 1862 // A.M. Co. // G.T.B. // 916 // No. 48. Translated this indicates the rifle was produced in 1862 by Ames Manufacturing Company of Massachusetts, and inspected by George T. Balch. The gun weighed 916 pounds and was registered as number 48. The gun is identified by historians as a "Type 2, Series 4" indicating it used the markings consistent with 1861 regulations. This James rifle has 10 groove rifling.
