Additional Description: In Irmo and the Dutch Fork Legacy (1990), Furman R.Younginer states that Irmo was the name given to the site about 10 miles from Columbia that was needed for water and refueling the wood-burning locomotives on the new Columbia, Newberry & Laurens Railroad, which began service through the 1-square mile town in July 1890 -- the same year in which the town was incorporated.
