Caption: Judge David J. Leahy (1867-1935)
Additional Description: An Illinois native, he moved to the New Mexico Territory in 1891 to be a school principal and later, superintendent of a county school system. He was admitted to the bar in 1897; a year later, he was an officer in Theodore Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" brigade in the Spanish-American War. He became U.S. Attorney for New Mexico in 1907 and later elected a state judge. He was shot in the arm by Magee during their confrontation but survived.
