Twenty-first Site on the Historical Sites of Abbeville Tour
An authentic antebellum mansion rich in Civil war history was expanded to its present size, and the maze of boxwood gardens was planted in 1859. (Source:
Historic Sites Tour of Abbeville County by the Abbeville Visitors Council (2010), pg 11.) The original house was built around 1825 and expanded to its present size by James C. Calhoun, owner from the 1840s to 1866. The home was restored by Brig. Gen. and Mrs. Ben Johnson.
