Soldiers and Sailors Monument . . Countless numbers of “Woodbridge Boys” enlisted in the United States Volunteer Army during the Civil War. One unit in particular, the 28th New Jersey - Company F, featured a large number of Woodbridge residents and won distinction in the Battles of Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg. . . The Battle of Williamsburg in 1862 saw the death of Woodbridge Lt. William C. Berry. To commemorate their brother and all who served in the Union forces, Berry’s brothers and sisters rallied the community to raise $2,100 for a stone monument honoring veterans of the “War of the Rebellion.” The edifice was unveiled April 11, 1911 at the junction of main and Berry Streets and later moved to its present position at Main, Berry and Rahway Avenue. . . The soldier portrayed is believed to be John M. Sutton, who served in the 5th New Jersey – Company H and saved the regimental colors at Gettysburg and Chancellorsville. In the monument’s foundation is a time capsule containing Civil War artifacts. The monument was restored in 2006 by the Historical Association of Woodbridge Township, with the addition of a Military Walk of Honor commemorating all who have fought in out nation’s wars, past and present. . .
