Inscription. A native of Wisconsin and graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, John E. Toepfer made a lifelong commitment to researching the greater prairie chicken, focusing many of his efforts on these grasslands of central Wisconsin. John’s research addressed declining prairie chicken numbers and their future in Wisconsin. In 2003, the Prairie Grouse Technical Council awarded him the prestigious Hamerstrom Award and recognized him as one of the foremost prairie chicken researchers in North America.
