1. Reading Adobe Marker
Inscription. Built 1847 by Major Pierson Barton Reading, who crossed the plains in 1843, and was granted Rancho Buena Ventura, most northern Mexican grant, 1844. Site of first county seat, 1850, when Shasta included other counties. Discovered gold at Clear Creek in March and at Reading Bar in July, 1848.

More about this marker. This marker is a "pointer" marker that the state put up, giving the general direction and distance to the historical site, which typically would also have its own marker. The site marker for this particular landmark, California Registered Historical Landmark No. 10, however, has more extensive text, and notes that the Reading Adobe was destroyed by vandals in 1942. Inasmuch as this marker makes no mention of the destruction of the adobe, it is likely that this pointer marker predates the Reading Adobe's demise.
