Bantam Chickens

Bantam chickens — or "banties" as they are affectionately called — are a naturally occurring small breed of chicken. Known for their ability to brood or hatch eggs, banties were long kept on English game farms for just this skill. Unlike other poultry, banties have a tendency to flock together at all times — a survival technique they developed to protect against predators. Many breeders consider banties an ornamental breed. But their meat and eggs, while smaller than those of traditional chickens, are actually quite tasty.
Today, banties are a popular "urban" breed of chicken since they require less space than other breeds as well as less food. Children also tend to enjoy raising banties because of their multicolored eggs and feathers, their small size and the bird's calm demeanor.
