1. Union Fire Company No 1 Marker
Inscription.
Operated 1742 to 1760 by borough fathers. Organized 14 August 1760 by leading citizens as Lancaster's first independent volunteer fire company. Active members included George Ross, Jasper Yeates, William Henry, Robert Fulton Sr, and James Buchanan. Company promoted public safety, modern firefighting practices and the introduction of professional fire department in 1882. Company continues as a historical-civic association dedicated to promotion of fire prevention and public safety. Union fire house stood on this site 1837 to 1854 and 200 feet north of here from 1854 to 1882.
