Inscription. Constructed by First Michigan Engineers and others, March 19, 1865. Occupied by Federals throughout the battle. Works begin 75 yards behind this marker.

These fortifications, built by members of the 1st Regiment Michigan Engineers and Mechanics on detached service with the XX Corps, are located in the woods east of the marker.
