1. Middletown in the Civil War Marker

Inscription. September, 1862, soldiers wounded in the Battle of South Mountain were hospitalized in churches here. July 1863, Gen. Meade established headquarters here as Union Forces pursued Confederates retreating from Gettysburg. July, 1864, Confederate Gen. Early occupied Middletown and collected $1,500 ransom.

Erected by the Maryland Civil War Centennial Commission.

The marker has been relocated from the busy intersection of the Old National Road and MD 17. It is now next to the Central Maryland Heritage League.
