For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his own life above and beyond the call of duty, on June 7, 1968, near Kontum City, South Vietnam, Phill McDonald displayed outstanding courage and bravery while under enemy fire; sacrificing his own life to save the members of his platoon.
