1. Carlsbad Santa Fe Depot Marker
Inscription.
Original depot built in 1887 and also served as telegraph, Wells Fargo, post office and general store. Renamed "Carl" from 1907 to 1917, it became the hub of local agriculture about 1915. The last passenger train stopped in 1957 and it was closed in 1960.
 
Erected 1987 by Carlsbad Business and Professional Women.

Due to the town being confused with Carlsbad, New Mexico, the town’s name and this rail station’s sign was changed to Carl in 1907 (the same year the current building was built to replace the original building), but strong sentiment from locals caused the name to be changed back to Carlsbad in 1917.
