1. Hilton Capitol Center Marker
Inscription. One of 200 Historic Hotels of America, the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center was first built in 1927 as the Hotel Heidelberg, the city's first luxury hotel and site of noteworthy social and political events. Governor Huey P. Long kept an unofficial residence on the fifth floor and allegedly dodged reporters by using the building's underground tunnel. In 2006, a $65 million restoration project brought back the hotel - and tunnel - after years of decline. The 290-room complex features a day spa, fine dining restaurant, bar and coffee shop.
