1. World War II Core Area Marker
Inscription. The massive Army buildup at the beginning of World War II brought together millions of American civilians from all walks of life. After induction, new recruits were assigned to a unit, usually a company in a regiment, and issued uniforms and equipment. The company area of barracks buildings, orderly and supply rooms and mess halls became the center of their lives. The very open nature of Army life forced soldiers to give up much of their individual identities and become effective unit members. Military training eventually transformed groups of individuals into cohesive fighting forces that defeated Axis armies on battlefields throughout the world. Comradeship begun in training and forged in battle often lasted a lifetime.
