1. Shoemaker Building Marker
Inscription. William Shoemaker, a partner in a Baker City wholesale grocery and grain business, built this building in 1906. Before moving to Baker City, Shoemaker had been in business at Rock Creek, a small community in north Baker Valley. He built and operated a flour mill there, and was instrumental in construction of the Rock Creek power plant, which provided the area with electricity. He died in 1923.
The building was constructed of volcanic tuff, as were many of the city’s commercial and public buildings during the first decade of the 20th Century. Early tenants in the building included a business college and lawyers’ offices. In later years, the upper floor was used for apartments.
