Amealco de Bonfil includes many Ñañhú (Otomí) indigenous towns. Amealco is considered to be one of the oldest populations of the State of Querétaro. It was founded in 1538 by Fernando de Tapia (Conín) and Nicolás de San Luis Montañés, descendant of the indigenous kings of the Provinces of Tula and Xilotepec, who subdued the indigenous people of the region on behalf of the Spanish Crown.
