Izaak Walton Killam, born in Yarmouth, N.S. in 1885, was the leading Canadian business person of the first half of the 20th Century. His Royal Securities Corporation owned, controlled or financed many of Canada's major companies, mainly in pulp and paper and electricity. In Nova Scotia, these included Bowater Mersey Paper Company, Moirs Chocolates and Nova Scotia Light & Power. He died in 1955.

Dorothy Johnston Killam, Mr. Killam's wife, died in 1965. She left their combined estates of $100 million to higher education in Canada through the Canada Council for the Arts, Dalhousie University, University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of British Columbia, and the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University. She also left $8 million to build the Izaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children in Halifax - now the IWK Health Centre.
