This call to set free the imprisoned South African leader Nelson Mandela is symbolic of our students' traditional commitment to racial justice. Inscribed during the anti-apartheid movement of the 1980's, it remained in the roadbed of the public alley approximately 80 feet north of this spot until it was moved to this location in 1999. When Mandela was freed in February 1990, The GW Hatchet editorialized:
"While we celebrate the release of Mandela, we cannot forget those in this nation who continues to struggle more than a century after their own 'freedom' was granted."

This plaque memorializes the communion of GW students to the antiaphartheid movement.

Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, President
The George Washington University

Dedicated in the year 2000
