Inscription. End of main gallery from Ewing's approach. Carried to this point the forenoon of July 4. Preparations had been made for charging a mine at head of gallery with 2200 pounds of powder, when work was stopped by order of Gen. Grant.
 
Erected by the United States War Department.
 
Location. 32° 22.204′ N, 90° 50.669′ W. Marker is in Vicksburg National Military Park, Mississippi, in Warren County. Marker is on Old Graveyard Road 0.8 miles west of Union Avenue, on the left when traveling west. Touch for map. Located at foot of Stockade Redan, tour stop #10.
