1. The Whaley House Marker
Inscription. Built by Thomas Whaley in 1856-57, this is the oldest brick structure in Southern California. In addition to being the home of the Whaley Family, it served variously as granary, store, courthouse and school, and as the town’s first theater. Whaley’s home was the cultural center of San Diego as well as its most luxurious residence.
 
Erected 1959 by San Diego County Board of Supervisors and Historical Markers Committee. (Marker Number 65.)

Built in 1856-57 for Thomas and Anna Whaley, the Whaley House is the oldest brick structure in Southern California. The house was the civic, cultural and business center of life in Old Town San Diego and is now reputed to be "America's Most Haunted House."

THE MANAGER has the honor to inform the citizens of San Diego, and Public generally, that, having Leased the upper part of the BRICK HOUSE, he has fitted up the Hall for the purpose of offering to the generous Public a short season, of his Moral, Chaste and Versatile Entertainments, consisting of Drama, Farce, Comedy, Singing and Dancing, Laughable Burlesques, Negro Delineations, &c., and hopes his untiring efforts to please, will meet with a Liberal Share of Patronage. He will offer his FIRST EXHIBITION On Wedensday, December 2nd. Admission: 50 cents, Childrens half price, Reserved seats 75 cents.
