Inscription. The Hayden Building is a classic example of Second Renaissance Revival architectural style. It was designed for the Kern County Land Company by San Francisco architect Charles I. Haven (1849-1916) and opened in 1904 as the Hayden Furniture Company. After 1908, it served a series of tenants: the Ancient Order of United Workmen, Mrs. Andrews Dancing Hall for children, the Continental Hotel, and the Valley Office Supply Company. In 1991 Curtis and Peggy Darling acquired the building, leased it as an office space and operated KBID Radio from the second floor. The Spotlight Theatre and Cafe, a theater for contemporary playwrites and composers, opened here in 1998 and occupied the basement, ground floor and mezzanine.

Erected 2015 by Kern County Historical Society.
