Inscription. Fencing the Land

The Smiths marked the boundary of their property with large stones gathered while clearing the land. They then built a fence over the stacked stones to keep wandering livestock out of their property.

They split thousands of rails and constructed a variety of fences throughout their property to enclose and contain their animals.

Remnants of the perimeter fence stone base are visible here.

We had cleared up to sixty acres...and got it under good fence and cultivation. -William Smith

2. Fencing the Land Marker
Marker is the last of four on a path proceeding from behind "The Log Home" and into "The Sacred Grove". From this marker, the path proceeds generally south crossing into Ontario County, and emerging eastward towards "The Frame House."
