Inscription.
The M777 Lightweight 155mm Howitzer (known as the LW155) was developed here at Picatinny Arsenal by a joint Marine Corps and Army program office from 1997-2005. The LW155 is the first ground combat system to make extensive use of high strength titanium alloy on all its major structural elements. A digital fire control system was added in 2005 (a first for towed artillery) which resulted in a change in designation to the M777A1/A2. The weapon was originally designed by BAE Systems and was greatly modified and enhanced by Picatinny engineers. This developmental prototype was manufactured in 2001 and was tested extensively prior to the LW155 production decision in October 2002. The LW155 Joint Program Management Office moved into this building in January 1999.
