Alban Gilpin Smith Goldsmith. Native of Delaware. Trained in medicine and surgery under E. McDowell, lived in this house 1825-30. He performed the 3rd ovariotomy in the U.S. (1823), was the first to perform laminectomy (1829), and was an innovative contributor to urologic surgery. Professor of Chemistry (1823-32); Professor of Surgery Medical College of Ohio (Cinc. 1833-37), and College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York (1837-39). In 1833 he obtained the first charter for the Louisville Medical Institute, friend and patron of numerous artists and sculptors in American, he was perhaps a miniaturist himself. Dr. Smith and his wife, Taliaferro Middleton, had 3 sons, 2 of whom became physicians.
