This church was built as part of the hospital of the same name, founded in the 16th century. The present building was constructed in the 18th century.

Regarding Parish of Santa Catarina. Two notable events happened here at the Parish of Santa Catarina. On August 15, 1770 the Hero of Mexican Independence Mariano Matamoros was baptized in the church. Secondly, during the Mexican American War in 1847 the priest Celedonio Domeco de Jarauta spoke here encouraging further resistance against the invading army.
