The Speer House is one of 445 American Presbyterian and Reformed Historical Sites registered between 1973 and 2003 by the Presbyterian Historical Society (PHS), headquartered in Philadelphia. In this three story brick townhouse at 234 Penn Street, Robert E. Speer was born on 10 September 1867. Prominent Presbyterian layman and religious statesman, Speer was secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the USA for

2. Speer House Presbyterian Marker
forty-six years. He was elected moderator of that church's General Assembly in 1927, and also served as president of the Federal Council of Churches and of the Foreign Missions Conference of North America. Author of many books on religion and missions, Dr. Speer's first book, The Man Christ Jesus, was published in 1896. Robert E. Speer died in 1947 and the new library at Princeton Theological Seminary was named in his honor.
