Inscription.
Nearby is grave of John Dolly (Dahle, 1749-1847), a Hessian mercenary in the Revolutionary War and an early settler in Germany Valley. Naming of Dolly Sods attributed to his surname and large tracks of grass sod lands found here.

Location. 38° 43.498′ N, 79° 24.236′ W. Marker is near Riverton, West Virginia, in Pendleton County. Marker is on S Dolly Hill Road (Local Route 9/4) just south of Germany Valley Road (County Route 9), on the left when traveling east. The marker is just off US 33 in Riverton. Take Roots Run Rd to left on Germany Valley Rd and immediate right on Horse Ridge Road. It is NOT at the cemetery on the left. YOU MUST DRIVE DOWN Horse Ridge road, make a left at the fork onto Dolly Hill Rd and continue down past the dead end sign, you will pass the John Dolly House on your left and the sign will be in your right, about a mile after the fork. More about this marker. When you are at the marker, far up on the hayfield hill will be John Dolly’s cemetery. Cemetery can be reached from Horse Ridge Road (Road No. 9/4), and down S Dolly Hill Rd. The cemetery is on PRIVATE LAND. KNOCK ON THE HOUSE AT 1027 S Dolly Hill Rd for permission to access their property and climb their field to visit the graves. It is not an easy walk, especially if the hay is grown high.
